DENVER—Foreclosure and property-tax lien cases have resulted in a 72 percent surge in civil filings in Colorado’s court system compared with last year.
A Denver Post examination of data from the state court administrator’s office shows there were 116,346 civil cases filed in the state’s district courts in fiscal 2010, up from 67,480 in 2009. A decade ago 39,161 civil cases were filed.
Colorado Office of the State Court Administrator spokesman Rob McCallum told the Post that property-tax liens are largely a paperwork problem that isn’t affecting courtroom time.
With recent state budget cutbacks, a dwindling corps of clerks is working to stay on top of the mounting paperwork.
