Here are some things you can count on: Death. Taxes. All-V’s Sandwiches.
Snuggled into an Eighth Avenue strip just a stone’s throw from Rose Medical Center, All V’s has been slinging submarine sandwiches and French fries for more than 40 years. Cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, all served in a bare-bones, fluorescent-lit room with an open kitchen and sprawling griddle. There is, happily, nothing pretentious or precious about this place — unlike the recent, unabating slew of overly kitschy sandwich shops in Denver. (Some of which make spectacular sandwiches, if you can stand the self-obsessed posturing they exhibit.)
Dozens of sandwiches are available at All-V’s, but tops on the menu is crowd favorite Avocado, Bacon and Cheese, a hot sub sandwich stuffed with melty cheese, gooshy avocado and impossibly crisp bacon. They offer large or small (your move: order the large one), with plenty of toppings (onion, pickle, oil, vinegar, pepper flakes and so forth).
Get it with a side of fries, even if you’ve sworn off fries, because these classic, hot, salty, faintly crispy fries are one of Denver’s hidden gems. Add on a soda, and you’ll spend about 10 bucks.
