MILWAUKEE — Former Marquette basketball coach Hank Raymonds died Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 86.
Raymonds, a former assistant coach under Al McGuire, took over as head coach after McGuire’s departure in 1977 and coached until 1983, compiling a record of 126-50.
After his coaching career, he continued working as the school’s athletic director until 1987.

Heisman finalists selected.
Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and Oregon running back LaMichael James — whose teams will meet in the national championship game Jan. 10 — were named finalists for the Heisman Trophy, and will be joined by Stanford’s Andrew Luck and Kellen Moore of Boise State for Saturday’s announcement in Times Square.
• Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player. Meanwhile, quarterback Kyle Parker, a draft pick of the Rockies, is back in good standings with his coaches and will start against South Florida in the Meineke Bowl on Dec. 31.
• Syracuse senior punter Rob Long will undergo immediate surgery to remove a benign brain tumor and won’t play for the Orange in the Pinstripe Bowl.
• Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis resigned and two other assistant coaches — offensive line coach Mac McWhorter and defensive line coach and special teams coordinator Mike Tolleson — are retiring after the Longhorns’ first losing season (5-7) since 1997.
• Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said Louisiana-Lafayette has expressed interest in associate head coach Joe DeForest, a former linebacker for the Ragin’ Cajuns, replacing fired coach Rickey Bustle.
• Leading San Diego State to its first winning season and bowl berth since 1998 earned coach Brady Hoke a two-year contract extension through 2015, an increase in salary and bonuses, increases for his assistants and improvements to practice facilities. The Aztecs (8-4) face Navy in Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23.
Guerin hangs up skates
PITTSBURGH — Longtime NHL forward Bill Guerin, unable to land a contract this season, retired after a career in which he scored 429 goals in 18 seasons with eight teams. He is expected to take a scouting or administrative position with the Penguins.
Also, Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin (knee) is day to day.
• Vancouver Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson is expected to miss at least a week after suffering a concussion in Sunday night’s 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
