Skiers can expect delays returning home tonight as highway crews meter traffic through the Eisenhower tunnel to ensure access for emergency vehicles, officials say.

Traffic is halted in eastbound lanes to allow backups in the tunnel to clear, said Mike Murray, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

“That causes back ups and delays,” Murray said. “It’s not too bad so far.”

Snow has tapered off since anywhere from 4 to 14 inches of snow fell overnight and earlier this morning, said David Barjenbruch, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

The roads in the mountains have cleared off for the most part but light snow continues to fall and in some spots the road is slick and blowing snow is a hazard, Barjenbruch said.

“Traffic will be slow,” he said.

Loveland Pass remains closed, Murray said.

As much as 14 inches of new powder fell overnight at Breckenridge. Copper Mountain and Vail each got 9 inches; Eldora 8 inches and Keystone got 4 inches, said Jim Kalina, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

One to 2 inches of snow is expected to fall tonight, Kalina said.

Temperatures will increase to the 50s by tomorrow in the Denver metro area and the 60s by Monday in the metro area, he added.

Temperatures in the mountains will rise to between 17 and 27 degrees today and fall between 11 and 19 degrees tonight.

The storm, which entered the northern half of the state from the Pacific, will wind down by Sunday night, Kalina said.
