For the 19th year, members of the St. Vrain Valley Young Farmers Association delivered nearly 1 1/2 tons of pinto beans to the Island Grove Village Apartments in Greeley on Friday afternoon.

“In a lot of ways, it’s become almost as much of a tradition as decorating the tree or caroling,” Young Farmers’ adviser Steve Coleman said in a news release.

The beans were distributed in 20- and 25-pound bags during the residents’ Christmas party. The 108-unit Island Grove Village is owned by Trinity Housing Corp., a nonprofit community effort of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Greeley.

“Of all the many activities we have at Island Grove, I think we like this one the best,” said Richard Maxfield, owner of Maxfield Services Corp., which manages the complex. “It’s about sharing and the holiday spirit and the real meaning of community.” The Greeley Tribune
