If Santa Claus is still planning to come to town this week, he should seriously consider renting a Humvee. Maybe a snowcat.

If he’s smart, both.

He will need the 4×4 to make his way up to the frosty mountains, which have the reindeer considerably overmatched by ridiculously deep snow. The snowcat is just for jollies. Among the jolliest is Steamboat Powdercats, where more than 150 inches of snow already this season have led to the biggest opening in its 29-year history and the earliest opening of the expert portion of its 10,000-acre Buffalo Pass permit ever.

The nearby Steamboat Ski Resort is on Santa’s “nice” list as well, along with sisters Winter Park and Mary Jane. After getting pummeled with powder the past four days (and the four weeks before that), the ski areas are touting the launch of their new 4by40 Pass offering two days at each U.S. 40 resort throughout the season for $199. The passes aimed at helping skiers avoid Interstate 70 traffic must be purchased by Dec. 31.
