ALLENSPARK, Colo.—Some residents of the mountain village of Allenspark are concerned that a federal forest-thinning project took out too many large trees.
The Boulder Daily Camera reports the residents agree the trees around their Boulder County town needs to be thinned because fire-suppression efforts have left the forest too dense.
They say the 390-acre project took out the largest and rarest trees from the ponderosa pine forest.
The U.S. Forest Service says the goal is a mix of younger and older trees that is representative of a more natural forest.
Forest Service officials have agreed to review plans for future thinning projects to take the residents’ concerns into account.
