BOYS BASKETBALL

Uneven scheduling continues.

Some teams are in league play. Others are still in nonleague action. And some unlucky programs are experiencing an idle stretch because of playing too many games before the holiday break or piling up the quarters from not having played enough in December.

So it goes in Colorado high school basketball.

Tonight, two-time defending Class 5A champion Regis Jesuit plays at George Washington in a 7 p.m. nonleague meeting of ranked teams.

On Friday, Fountain-Fort Carson plays at Palmer in the 5A Colorado Springs Metro, Boulder plays at Monarch in the 5A Front Range and Broomfield hits the road for Longmont in the 4A Northern. All those tipoffs are at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, look for a 5 p.m. encounter of Ralston Valley at Columbine in 5A Jefferson County.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Trojans vs. Eagles worth watching.

Four-time defending Class 4A champion Broomfield took a hit last weekend against 5A Legacy, only the Eagles’ sixth loss over five-plus seasons.

It didn’t help that three regulars were serving a suspension.

The Eagles got back to 4A earlier this week and will host second-ranked Longmont in the 4A Northern on Friday.

A lighter schedule Saturday includes Elbert at Simla in 1A.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Try out the new tank.

It has been a year in the making, but Smoky Hill and swimming coach Scott Cohen finally get to show off their new pool.

Saturday’s Smoky Hill Invitational will bring together 11 teams and showcase some of the state’s best gearing up for next month’s state meets.

Caroline Piehl of the host Buffs is an all-around talent, as is Legend’s Allison Arnold.

WRESTLING

A-West meet awesome.

The gym formally know as the Habitat of the Cat will be hopping this weekend during the Arvada West Invitational. Not only will Class 5A’s top-ranked Coronado Cougars compete there, Grand Junction and Central (G.J.), as well as powerhouse teams from Pine Creek, Pomona, Ponderosa and Bear Creek, give the meet a distinctively deep field.

Other tournament sites to keep an eye on this week include Alamosa, Evergreen, Florence, Poudre, Pueblo Centennial and Salida.
