Former Colorado quarterback and NFL journeyman Koy Detmer wore his Buffs jersey to the San Antonio area school where he helps coach the football team. Detmer had some reason for school pride. His nephew, Somerset High School quarterback Stevie Dorman, committed to CU the previous night.
“Koy loved Colorado so much,” said Somerset coach and family patriarch Sonny Detmer. “He was running around all day in his CU jersey.”
Koy Detmer, an assistant coach for his father, also was uncommitted late in the recruiting process nearly 20 years ago.
His older brother, Heisman winner Ty Detmer, sold ex-CU coach Bill McCartney on Koy at an all-star game.
The brothers combined for more than 20,000 yards passing in college.
Dorman, 6-feet-4, 215 pounds, committed Thursday night to new CU coach Jon Embree. Detmer played for the Buffs from 1992-96, throwing for 5,390 yards.
Ty Detmer won the 1990 Heisman Trophy at BYU, and his 15,031 career yards passing stands second on the NCAA all-time list.
Dorman won’t take his official visit to Boulder until next week.
The senior Detmer said while interest had picked up for Dorman, most schools wanted quarterbacks with spread offense experience. Somerset ran a West Coast style offense, and Detmer has always had pass-oriented offenses since his sons played for him.
Dorman is the son of the Dee Dorman, the sister of Ty and Koy.
“He understands the game,” the high school coach said. “He’s a little bigger than Koy and Ty were at this age. He plays like Ty and Koy. He sees the game. He understands the game.”
Dorman threw for more than 9,253 yards as a three-year starter who also played some as a freshman.
Corner commits.
Sherrard Harrington, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback from H.D. Woodson High in Washington D.C., extended an oral commitment to Colorado, according to , which rates him three stars.
Harrington visited CU this weekend.
