WASHINGTON — The head of the United Auto Workers said the union’s future is tied to its ability to sign up workers at U.S. plants owned by foreign-based car companies.
UAW president Bob King told union members at a legislative conference Monday that the organizing efforts are critical. The union has not chosen which foreign automaker it will target. King said the UAW will make a decision within three months.
The UAW plans to picket hundreds of car dealerships this year as part of its campaign.
During the past three decades, the UAW has had little success in organizing workers at U.S. factories owned by Japanese, South Korean and German auto companies.
King said that if the UAW doesn’t organize these plants, he doesn’t “think there’s a long-term future” for the union.
