Getting your player ready...

With their dramatic scale, exuberant colors and pop sensibility, Riva Sweetrocket’s exquisitely realized pastels are easy to like.

Seven of her recent works — a tasty introduction — are on view for just 10 more days in the Gates Garden Court at the Denver Botanic Gardens, 1007 York St.

Fascinating, unexpected juxtapositions abound in Sweetrocket’s bold compositions, suggesting narratives. In “Heaven and Earth,” 64 by 84 inches, bold, oversized renderings of a white flower, a string of pearls and a hand clasping an orange electrical cord float enigmatically on a background divided between fire and sky.

The exact meaning of the piece remains unclear, but it doesn’t really seem to matter. More important, here and in all of Sweetrocket’s pastels, is the overall sense of fun, energy and visual play.

The exhibition, titled “Riva Sweetrocket: Extra Ordinary,” runs through Jan. 30. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Free with regular admission. 720-865-3500 or botanicgardens . Kyle MacMillan
