COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—North Dakota is back in first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association after rolling over Colorado College on Saturday 6-0.
Six different players scored and Danny Kristo assisted on three goals for fourth-ranked North Dakota. With the win, the Fighting Sioux (19-8-2, 14-6-0) earned a split of the two-game weekend series and moved into sole possession of first place. North Dakota has 28 points, one more than idle Denver.
North Dakota rode a four-goal second period to its third win in its last four games at Colorado College (15-12-1, 9-9-0).
“We played our best period of the year in the second period,” North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol said.
Brock Nelson, Brett Hextall, Carter Rowney, Matt Frattin, Derrick LaPoint and Joe Gleason scored for the Sioux.
Hextall snapped a six-game goal-scoring drought and Frattin netted his 21st goal, tying him with Niagara’s Paul Zanette for the national lead.
Gleason’s goal was his first for the Fighting Sioux. He was in the lineup in place of senior defenseman Chay Genoway, who was injured in Friday’s 4-2 loss. Genoway missed most of last season after suffering a concussion in November. He recently had a 12-game point scoring streak, which tied the school record.
Fighting Sioux goalie Aaron Dell faced just 20 shots to record his fourth shutout.
Colorado College goalies Joe Howe and Josh Thorimbert combined for 26 saves.
