LOVELAND — Brutally cold temperatures are putting a damper on Loveland’s 65-year-old Valentine Re-Mailing Program.
The Loveland Chamber of Commerce and the Loveland Post Office today decided to postpone the first day of the program. They are worried the frigid weather would cause health problems for the volunteers who annually help re-stamp love letters and cards with Loveland’s postmark and Valentine cachet.
“The success of this program is largely due to the dedication of our senior volunteers who spend the first two weeks of February stamping Valentines from across the world,” said Loveland Chamber spokeswoman Nicole Yost.
“With the extremely low temperatures we are facing this year, we feel that is is in the best interest of our volunteers to postpone until 1 p.m. on Thursday when the warmer temperatures are expected,” she said said. “The health and safety of the volunteers who make this possible is utmost importance to us.”
Thus, the first day of Valentine card stamping and the kick-off of the remailing program will take place at the Loveland Chamber of Commerce Conference Room, 5400 Stone Creek Circle.
Miss Loveland Valentine, Loveland High School senior, Jamie Felton, will apply the first stamp to the first valentine card to be re-mailed this season.
Yost says that more than 160,000 valentine cards are re-mailed from Loveland with the special cachet stamp. The cards, she said, come from around the world to receive the stamp and special cancellation, Loveland postmark.
