At the recent SnowSports Industries America show in Denver, hundreds of manufacturers unveiled their product designs for next winter. Here is an item from a Colorado company that caught our eye.
Designers are putting all kinds of emphasis these days on socks for snow sports, and they’re coming up with better fit, as well as finer fabrics and aesthetics to keep feet warm, dry and comfortable. Among the innovators are Peter and Patty Duke of Steamboat Springs, who first created SmartWool. Their new company is Point6, named for the ideal body temperature, 98.6. The designs for kids and adults are made of compact spun merino wool, which makes them pill-resistant and smooth. (And unlike some wool, not scratchy.) Ski and snowboarding versions also have deep heel pockets to hold the foot in place, smooth toe seams so you don’t feel bumps, a snug fit that helps them go sleekly under boots, cushioning in areas where you need it (like the top of the foot), and reinforced toes and heel areas for extra strength. The designs are also colorful and fun — with snowflakes, vine patterns, florals and butterflies. Prices from $14.95 to $21.95. For a list of retailers, visit
