The Republican-controlled House reversed itself Thursday and voted to abandon going to a conference committee with the Democratic-led Senate to work out differences over how much money the state has to spend.

Rep. Brian DelGrosso, R-Loveland, said a conference committee was pointless. He made a motion that the House adhere to its earlier position, which would set the general fund at $195 million less than an estimate by state economists.

After Thursday’s 33-32 party-line vote in the House, the measure headed back to the Senate. Majority Leader John Morse, D-Colorado Springs, said the Senate would adhere to its position of sticking with the higher figure developed by state economists, thereby killing the measure.

Still, the resolution was always nonbinding on the Joint Budget Committee, which submits a budget to the full legislature. So, the debate over where to cut an additional $195 million might not happen.Tim Hoover, The Denver Post
