Adams State’s Katelyn Lovato tied the NCAA Division II softball hitting-streak record with hits in the Grizzlies’ first two games of the season Friday.

Lovato, a sophomore from Northglenn, went 2-for-4 in the Grizzlies’ opener at the Desert Stinger Classic in Las Vegas, a 15-6 win over St. Edward’s.

Lovato singled to lead off the second game, a 16-8 win over Upper Iowa, to match the record of 40 consecutive games. She hit in all 38 games of her freshman season.

Van Petegen named Garmin-Cervelo adviser.

Peter Van Petegen, a Paris-Roubaix winner and two-time Tour of Flanders winner, has been appointed spring cobblestone classics adviser by Team Garmin-Cervelo.

The Belgian, who retired in 2007, will concentrate on the following spring classics held on cobblestones: Milan-San Remo, Dwars Door Vlaandaren-Waregem, Gent-Wevelgem, Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of the Boulder-based team, will direct the other races, including the Grand Tours.

“We’ve said all along that we’ve wanted to become stronger in the classics, and now we’re coming into 2011 with one of the strongest classics lineups in the peloton, with one of the best advisers,” Vaughters said in a statement. “Having never ridden the cobbled classics myself, I thought it was important to have someone else in the car with that experience.” John Henderson, The Denver Post

Mullan to coach Smoky Hill boys soccer.

Smoky Hill hired Kersten Mullan to coach its boys soccer team. Mullan is the wife of Rapids forward Brian Mullan, a Regis Jesuit graduate.

Mullan, who teaches at Smoky Hill, coached the girls team at Dobie High School in the Houston area for the last four seasons. Ryan Casey, The Denver Post

Brighton’s Serna makes roster.

Dillon Serna of Brighton is one of seven midfielders on the final roster for the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Serna, a Rapids Academy product and member of the U.S. national development team program in Bradenton, Fla., is traveling to Jamaica today with the rest of the team, which is set to face Cuba to open Group B play Monday.

Hawkeyes squeak past DU gymnasts.

The University of Denver gymnastics team (6-5) posted its highest road score of the season with 196.200 points at the Iowa Hawkeye dual meet, but the Pioneers were edged by the Hawkeyes, who racked up 196.350 points.

DU’s Moriah Martin tied for first on vault, and Annamari Maaranen tied for first on the bars.
