RESTON, Va. — Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been formally charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a road rage incident earlier this month.
Fairfax County police say Haynesworth and his attorney appeared at a police station Saturday morning. Haynesworth signed a summons warrant charging him with assault and left. He’s scheduled to appear in court on March 31.
• Redskins kick returner Brandon Banks and a close friend were stabbed early Saturday during an altercation outside a downtown D.C. nightclub.
Banks received a surface wound to his side that required stitches and was expected to be released today from an area hospital.
Cook wins World Cup freestyle
MOSCOW — American Emily Cook scored a 93.06 to earn the second World Cup freestyle victory of her career.
Cook, who has been competing with the U.S. team for 13 years, last won a World Cup event in 2008. That victory also came in Moscow. Anton Kushnir of Belarus won the men’s event.
• Lindsey Jacobellis cruised to victory in the Snowboarding Grand Prix to capture the ladies U.S. title in Park City, Utah.
Jonathan Cheever was second in the men’s final behind Canadian Kevin Hill, but as the top American finisher claimed the U.S. crown.
• Katherine Reutter of the U.S. clinched her fourth victory in short track speedskating this season, winning the 1,500-meter World Cup race in Moscow. Noh Jinkyu of South Korea won the men’s 1,500 ahead of Travis Jayner of the U.S.
• Canada’s Alex Gough snapped Germany’s 105-race winning streak in World Cup women’s luge in Paramonovo, Russias.
Clijsters-Kvitova in final
PARIS — Kim Clijsters will face Petra Kvitova in the final of the Open Gaz de France today.
Clijsters, who will be ranked No. 1 on Monday, defeated Kaia Kanepi 6-1, 7-5. Kvitova cruised past Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-2, 6-0.
• Robin Soderling will defend his title against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Soderling beat Viktor Troicki 7-5, 6-4 while Tsonga defeated Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Brethren captures Derby prep
OLDSMAR , Fla. — Brethren easily defeated nine rivals in the $225,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs — a four-length win over Too Experience in an early steppingstone to the Kentucky Derby.
• Tapizar, considered by some the early Derby favorite, weakened late and finished a distant fifth in the $250,000 Robert B. Lewis at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.
• Silver Medallion won the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby by 1 1/4 lengths at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif.
Lagat sets another record
NEW YORK — Bernard Lagat set a U.S. indoor record in the 2-mile run (8:10.07) , breaking a 21-year-old mark to become the American record-holder at the five distances from 1,500 meters to 2 miles.
