Gambling revenue tumbled in January at the state’s mountain casinos.
Overall, revenue fell by 7.9 percent compared to January 2010, to $59.2 million. In Cripple Creek, revenue fell by 9.1 percent compared to 2010 to $9.9 million.
In Black Hawk, which has generally prospered since the 33-story Ameristar Casino opened in 2009, revenue fell by 8.5 percent to $44.1 million. Central City was the lone bright spot, with revenue climbing less than 1 percent to $5.2 million.
Lois Rice, executive director of the Colorado Gambling Association, thinks January’s bitterly cold weather had more to do with the numbers than a renewed economic slump.
“Typically once we start getting out of the doldrums of winter and into the spring, things start picking up,” Rice said.
