BOSTON — The Bruins acquired defenseman Tomas Kaberle from Toronto, looking to bolster their blue line as well as their hopes for a Stanley Cup run.

Boston sent prospect Joe Colborne, who played at the University of Denver, and two draft picks to the Maple Leafs on Friday for the three-time all-star.

“We felt the time was right with our team,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said. “It’s a strong message to our team and to our fans that we want to win and we want to be successful.”

Blues trade Brewer.

The Blues traded defenseman Eric Brewer, the team captain, to the Lightning.

The Blues acquired the rights to unsigned draft pick Brock Beukeboom, also a defenseman, plus a third-round draft pick in 2011.

The 31-year-old Brewer played 332 games over six seasons with St. Louis. He had eight goals and six assists with a plus-1 rating in 54 games this season.

Jovanovski has surgery.

The Coyotes placed veteran defenseman Ed Jovanovski on the team’s injured reserve list with a facial injury.

Coach Dave Tippett said Jovanovski underwent surgery Friday for an orbital bone fracture. He’s expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

Jovanovski was injured in Thursday’s 4-3 victory over Atlanta.
