Denver boxer Mike Alvarado used a patient but sturdy right hand to win a lopsided fight Saturday, stopping Dean Harrison of Wolverhampton, England, after four rounds in a junior welterweight bout in Las Vegas.
Alvarado (29-0, 21 KOs) won a third consecutive fight by knockout, the eighth KO in his past nine fights. He has a more difficult fight scheduled April 16 against Vernon Paris (24-0, 14 KOs) in Puerto Rico.
Alvarado started Saturday’s bout with frequent left-hand jabs in the early rounds. He then stunned Harrison (16-5) with a flurry of punches late in the third and fourth rounds, letting loose with right-hand jabs and uppercuts.
In the fourth, a heavy right hand to the body crumpled Harrison, who by then was bleeding from his right eye. After the bell, Harrison’s corner asked referee Robert Byrd to stop the fight.

Jason Fabian scored twice and Jacques Lamoureux, Kyle DeLaurell and George Michalke each had a goal and an assist to help Air Force (14-11-6, 12-7-6) defeat host Mercyhurst 6-5 in an Atlantic Hockey Association game. The Falcons got off to a fast start, outshooting the Lakers (13-15-4, 11-12-2) 17-8 in the first period while building a 3-1 lead.

Dan Bakala’s 34 saves led Bemidji State to a 2-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Colorado College.
Colorado College (17-15-2, 11-12-1 WCHA) outshot the Beavers 35-17. But Bakala held the Tigers to just one goal, Stephen Schultz’s power-play goal late in the first period. Bakala had a dozen saves in each of the first two periods for the Beavers (12-14-4, 8-12-4).

Jeremy Abbott of Aspen finished third at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Taiwan with 225.71 points.
World champion Daisuke Takahashi of Japan won with a score of 244.00. Abbott’s 148.98 score in the free program was his best this season.
Rachael Flatt of Colorado Springs was third after the ladies short program, trailing Japan’s Miki Ando and Mao Asada. The free skate is today.
