“Megamind”
(Available Friday) This impossibly slick, sweetly wise animated romp is a nature-versus-nurture ride, a hyper-amusing parable of the meaning of destiny. Directed by Tom McGrath (“Madagascar”), it’s a good-take-on-evil tussle. An alien baby with just-so hair lands in a mansion and grows up to be masked superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt), the protector of Metro City. But Megamind (Will Ferrell) winds up in an institution for the criminally gifted. Like an extraterrestrial Wile E. Coyote, Megamind is skilled — at losing. The rest of the cast is ace, too: Tina Fey, Jonah Hill. There’s a lesson for young and — more to the point — the old in the adoration Metro City’s fawning citizens offer Metro Man. PG. 1 hour 36 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Due Date”
This comedy aims the slow burn of Robert Downey Jr. at the addled idiocy of Zach Galifianakis in a “Hangover” director’s version of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” Shockingly, it’s funny, often in shocking or at least wildly inappropriate ways. The setup: Peter, a harried businessman (Downey) dashes to the Atlanta airport so he can be home in time for his wife (Michelle Monaghan) to give birth. But Peter runs afoul of Ethan (Galifianakis), a shambling bear of a boob, traveling with a pug dog named Sonny. Before Peter can say, “Get me a restraining order,” Ethan has had him shot by an Air Marshal, kicked off the plane and put on the international “No Fly” list. He is trapped in a Subaru Impreza dawdling cross country with a chatty dope who smokes dope. It’s a streamlined movie, with two very funny actors carrying the laugh load. R. 1 hour, 35 minutes.
