WASHINGTON — The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, pointing to continued improvement in the jobs market as the economy picks up speed.

Initial jobless claims dropped by 22,000 to 391,000 in the week ended Feb. 19, the Labor Department said today in its weekly report. The previous week’s figures were revised to 413,000 from 410,000.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had expected claims would fall last week by just 5,000 to 405,000.
