LA SALLE — A 14-year-old boy from North Valley Middle School is in the juvenile detention center Wednesday, facing charges of menacing and second-degree assault, after he allegedly poisoned some gum and gave it to other students.
The boy, who is an 8th-grader at the La Salle School, is accused of using home-cleaning chemicals from his house to “poison” some gum he then passed out to students at the school. Because he is a juvenile, his name was not released.
But La Salle Chief of Police Carl Harvey said Wednesday the boy was apparently angry at some students or at the school itself when he started talking about “sending some people to the hospital.”
Police were notified of the incidents Monday evening, after the school had suspended the boy. He did not go to school Tuesday, but apparently, pieces of the gum had already been distributed.
Although the 14-year-old was not allowed to return to school Tuesday, Superintendent Jo Barbie said they were told he had access to weapons, so the schools were locked down until the boy was arrested.
