Fort Collins police arrested two brothers after a three-hour standoff that ended when a SWAT team launched tear gas into the house where they holed up.

The incident began at about 2:25 this morning when someone reported a disturbance in the 1000 block of Cypress Drive.

Police determined that a man with a gun had threatened a neighbor.

“There was a party in the area earlier that officers responded to. Everyone cleared out. Then there was this,” said Sgt. Jon Holsten.

Holsten said he didn’t know if those arrested had been at the earlier party or if the two calls were connected.

An armed suspect was inside a house with eight others —none of the people in the house would talk to the police or leave.

“Clearly they were trying to avoid dealing with officers but in that situation we are not going away,” Holsten said.

The Fort Collins Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team arrived at around 3:50 a.m. and began negotiations with occupants of the home.

Ultimately, the SWAT team launched gas into the residence, forcing seven people to exit.

A subsequent search by SWAT resulted in the arrest of two suspects still in the house around 6:00 a.m.

Joshua Scheer, 23, is being held on two counts of felony menacing at the Larimer County Jail.

Devin Scheer, 21, his brother, was arrested for failing to leave a residence upon request and obstructing a police officer. He has been released on $2,250 bond.

The seven others were released without charges, police said.
