A woman gave birth to a baby inside a sport utility vehicle on the side of the highway Monday morning with the help of emergency personnel.

The baby was born about 6:10 a.m. in the vehicle pulled over on the shoulder of eastbound West Sixth Avenue near the Knox Court overpass, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

The mother and child were taken to a hospital for a precautionary checkup, he said.

Champagne said the woman started having contractions Monday morning, and she and her husband set out for the hospital.

On the way, the couple realized they weren’t going to make it, so the husband pulled over to the shoulder, and the woman gave birth. Firefighters, police and paramedics were on hand.
