DENVER—A developer has proposed building a $105 million reservoir on a ranch southwest of Denver to serve the growing Front Range, but it hasn’t yet lined up the water to fill it.

The reservoir proposed by Penley Water Co. would hold up to 22,500 acre-feet of water. The company says the reservoir is needed to supplement suburban wells, which produce less water as underground aquifers are depleted.

An acre-foot of water is roughly enough to serve two families of four for a year.

Penley Water senior principal Chris Fellows says the Front Range, particularly northwest Douglas County, is in desperate need of a renewable, sustainable solution that includes water storage.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that staff for Douglas County commissioners have recommended approving the project.
