BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder police have arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a University of New Hampshire athlete.

Kevin Michael McGregor, 22, of Longmont, Colo., was being held without bail Saturday in the death of Todd Walker, 20, of Edwards, Colo. Walker was a redshirt freshman football player in New Hampshire.

Investigators have said Walker and a female friend were walking home from a party when a man approached them early Friday and struggled with them near the University of Colorado campus. The man fired shots, one of which hit Walker.

McGregor faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery and first-degree murder during the commission of another crime, police said.

Police Chief Mark Beckner said a handgun that may have been used in the shooting was recovered from McGregor’s home.

It wasn’t immediately known whether McGregor had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

The shooting had some students questioning the city of Boulder’s decision to pull five emergency phones near campus.

The Daily Camera reports that some students said the emergency phones were extra protection. But city officials said there was no phone where the shooting occurred and that the woman used her cellphone to call for help.

A city spokeswoman said the phones were used mostly for prank calls.
