INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Novak Djokovic beat top-ranked Rafael Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the BNP Paribas Open title on Sunday, keeping the Serbian undefeated this year.
Djokovic improved to 18-0, including victories at the Australian Open and in Dubai last month. He will move into the No. 2 spot when the ATP Tour rankings are released today, having bumped Roger Federer down to third after he lost to Djokovic in the semifinals. Nadal will remain No. 1.
Earlier, top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki defeated 15th-seeded Marion Bartoli 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to win the women’s title.
White Sox wary with Peavy
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy has been shut down with what doctors believe is rotator cuff tendinitis.
The right-hander had surgery to repair a detached muscle in his throwing shoulder in July and had been setback-free so far this spring, posting a 4.11 ERA in 15 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, the White Sox selected Matt Thornton as their closer, tabbing the left-hander to replace departed free agent Bobby Jenks.
• Grady Sizemore, a three-time AL all-star, played for the first time since last May because of knee surgery, serving as the Cleveland Indians’ designated hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
• The San Diego Padres claimed right-hander Pat Neshek off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.
Colas, Kearney cap seasons
MYRKDALEN-VOSS, Norway — Guilbaut Colas of France won a dual moguls event to clinch the overall World Cup title, and Hannah Kearney of the U.S. closed out the freestyle Cup finals with her ninth win of the season.
The 27-year-old Colas defeated Mikael Kingsbury of Canada in the final. Alexandre Bilodeau of Canada was third.
Kearney beat Jennifer Heil of Canada to stretch her winning margin in the moguls standings. Justine Dufour-Lapointe took the consolation round to finish third.
• World Cup champion Maria Riesch helped Germany win the season-ending team alpine event in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
• Marit Bjoergen of Norway won the 10-kilometer freestyle pursuit to seal victory in the multistage cross country World Cup final in Falun, Sweden.
Former Buff Goucher is third
NEW YORK — Former University of Colorado star Kara Goucher finished third in the women’s division of the NYC Half-Marathon.
Caroline Rotich won the race in 1 hour, 8 minutes and 52 seconds, pulling away from fellow Kenyan Edna Kiplagat (1:09:00). Goucher finished in 1:09:03.
Mo Farah of England outsprinted Gebre Gebremariam in the final 200 meters to win the men’s race in 1:00.23.
