Three people were killed, including a child, and two were injured last night after a truck and a SUV collided head-on near Durango.
At 5:01 p.m. a Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 160 when the driver drifted over the center line and hit an eastbound Toyota FJ Cruiser head-on, according to Trooper Heather Cobler, spokeswoman for the Colorado State Patrol.
Both the truck and the SUV immediately caught on fire.
The driver of the truck, David Hooper, 51, of Cortez, was killed instantly, she said.
The driver of the Cruiser, Robert McDonald, 53, of Colorado Springs, and a Jaden McDonald, 10, also died on the scene.
Two other passengers were airlifted with serious injuries to the University of New Mexico Hospital and the University of Utah Hospital, respectively.
It is not known why the driver crossed the center line and the crash is still under investigation.
Troopers do not believe excessive speed or alcohol to have contributed to this crash, Coblers said.
