A fire on the Eastern Plains that forced the evacuation of about 90 residents of Karval yesterday is out this morning.

The fire burned 12,000 acres, destroying one barn, two county road bridges and some cars, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire started about 4 p.m. yesterday near State Highway 71 and County Road M.

An evacuation was initiated at 6:30 p.m. but was canceled after the fire turned south.

A total of 11 fire departments – about 49 fire units – responded to the fire in addition to air support.

At 9:30 p.m. the fire was 100 percent contained. Crews stayed on scene until about 2 this morning, putting out hot spots and insuring the fire did not flare back up.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
