DENVER—The Denver Parks and Recreation Department has bought two acres along the South Platte River Greenway where it plans to build a park for the redeveloping River North neighborhood.

Trust for Public Land project manager Wade Shelton said Wednesday the property cost $2.4 million. The parks department worked with the Trust for Public Land to secure a $1 million grant for the land from Go Outdoors Colorado, which distributes Colorado Lottery money.

River North, or RiNo, was once an industrial neighborhood, but it is being redeveloped for residential and mixed commercial uses.

The land the city bought once held a commercial trucking operation. Shelton says the recent land purchase wouldn’t have happened without the recession, which reduced competition from developers that could have boosted the price for the parcel.
