OSLO, Norway — Grete Waitz,who won nine New York City Marathons and the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, died Tuesday after a six-year battle with cancer. She was 57.
There was no word on what type of cancer felled the Norweigan, who disclosed no details about her condition after being diagnosed in 2005.
“That’s not my personality,” she said in November of that year. “I’ve always been a private person. . . . I’ll do that when I cross the finish line and win this race.”
Waitz also won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1983 world championships in Helsinki, Finland. A year later, she took second behind Joan Benoit in the first women’s Olympic marathon.
NHL tuned in with NBC, Versus
NEW YORK — The NHL is staying on NBC and Versus through the 2020-21 season after agreeing to a deal worth $2 billion.
NBC will remain the exclusive network home for the NHL, and Versus is retaining the major cable rights. Versus will increase its number of regular-season telecasts from 50 to 90 games.
• San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture, New York Islanders right wing Michael Grabner and Carolina Hurricanes center Jeff Skinner are the finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL’s rookie of the year. The winner will be revealed June 22.
Russian ups stakes in Arsenal
LONDON — Russian investor Alisher Usmanov increased his stake in Arsenal despite American sports tycoon Stan Kroenke mounting a full takeover bid after securing a controlling stake in the Premier League soccer club.
Underlining his vow not to sell his stake to Kroenke, Usmanov spent $115,600 on six shares to hold 27 percent in the club.
• Los Angeles Galaxy defender Leonardo will miss the rest of the Major League Soccer season because of two torn ligaments in his right knee.
NFL, players continue talks
MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL and its locked-out players wrapped up a third day of court-ordered talks and agreed to resume talks this morning.
