Volunteers and staff at Barr Lake are celebrating the birth of at least one hatchling to a pair of bald eagles that have tended a nest in the wildlife refuge since 1986, Colorado State Parks announced today
The Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory’s Bald Eagle Watch volunteers spotted the parents “exhibiting typical hatching behavior” on April 2, and volunteers spotted an eaglet in the nest Saturday.
“The bald eagle pair will be busy feeding their eaglets a variety of prey including fish, waterfowl and prairie dogs,” according to the parks service. “If all goes well, the juveniles will fly from the nest in late June and remain in the area with their parents most of the summer.”
Visitors can take a look by walking from the Barr Lake Nature Center to a viewing gazebo, a 2.5-mile round trip. For those who can’t walk, the “Eagle Express” will be available each weekend beginning on May 8.
Reservations are recommended for the service, offered at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. on Sundays throughout the summer.
Barr Lake is in Brighton near Interstate 76, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Denver. The Nature Center is open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., where visitors can register and buy park passes.
