The Colorado State Fair wants to reduce its electricity costs as its utility bill surges toward $1 million a year.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported Thursday the fair’s managers say electricity is the main cause of the soaring costs.

The fair’s overall utility bill has already exceeded $815,000, and the fiscal year doesn’t end until July.

Electricity alone cost more than $500,000 through March 31.

Joe Dean, director of fairgrounds facilities, says he will meet with representatives of Black Hills Energy, the fair’s electricity supplier, to discuss options.

Dean says Black Hills will do an energy audit of the fairgrounds, which could find potential savings.
