FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Fort Collins police detective accused of lying in a murder case has asked a judge to move his perjury trial out of Larimer County due to what he calls “explosive” and “massive” publicity.

The Coloradoan reports a judge is expected to decide Monday whether to grant the request from Lt. James Broderick. The 54-year-old investigator is charged with seven counts of perjury stemming from his investigation and testimony in the murder conviction of Timothy Masters.

Broderick has pleaded not guilty.

Masters was convicted in 1999 of killing Peggy Hettrick of Fort Collins. He was released from prison in 2008 when new DNA testing led to his conviction being overturned.

City and county officials settled lawsuits by Masters for a total of $10 million.

The prosecutor opposes moving the trial.
