PHILADELPHIA — Right-hander Roy Oswalt is scheduled to return to the Phillies on Thursday and could start Saturday against the Braves.

Oswalt (3-1) left the team Wednesday to be with his family in tornado-ravaged Mississippi. Left-hander Cole Hamels (3-1) will start tonight against the Nationals in place of Oswalt.

Also, right fielder Domonic Brown, who broke his right hamate bone in spring training, was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Second baseman Chase Utley, out all season with a knee injury, played a three-inning simulated game Sunday and remains listed as day to day.

Cano sidelined

NEW YORK — Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was out of the starting lineup for New York’s game against the Tigers with what he described as a bone bruise on his left hand. Cano said he suffered the injury while taking a pickoff throw during Sunday’s game against Toronto.

Cardinals place Freese on DL, activate Craig

ST. LOUIS — The Cardinals placed third baseman David Freese on the disabled list and activated infielder-outfielder Allen Craig (groin).

Freese, who was hit in the hand by a pitch from Braves reliever Scott Linebrink during Sunday’s game, is scheduled to have surgery today on his broken left hand and is expected to miss nine to 12 weeks.

Footnotes.

Mets right-hander Jenrry Mejia, one of the team’s top pitching prospects, has a complete tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right elbow and likely is bound for Tommy John surgery and a year on the sideline.

• The Indians traded Triple-A infielder Jordan Brown to the Brewers for cash considerations. Brown, 27, played in 26 games for the Indians last season, batting .230 with two RBIs.
