FORT CARSON, Colo.—Fort Carson has won two awards sponsored by the Army chief of staff for innovative practices and for improving the quality of life for its soldiers.

The post outside Colorado Springs said Tuesday it was awarded an Exemplary Practice Award for using a machine that compresses soil into blocks that can be used to build various structures for training. When the exercise is over, the blocks can be crumbled into soil again.

Fort Carson also won a bronze award for working to improve quality of life for soldiers, their families and civilian employees. That award carries a $225,000 incentive to promote the post’s quality-of-life initiatives.

The awards were presented late last month.
