To honor their father, two sisters have donated $2 million to the University of Colorado in Boulder to establish the Louis P. Singer Endowed Chair in Jewish History, making CU one of six public U.S. universities and one of 17 total to have one.

The chair supports a distinguished senior faculty position in perpertuity and bolsters the CU Jewish Studies Program launched four years ago, university officials said. Since the program began, enrollment has exceeded 700 students each semester and course offerings have more than tripled. Topics range from Jews Under Islam to Women and Jewish Law, as well as five courses in Modern Hebrew.

CU alumnae Midge Korczak and Leslie Singer Lomas said they endowed the chair in appreciation of a father, who, they said, stoked their love of history and respect for civil rights.

Singer was a partner in the over-the-counter securities firm Troster-Singer. His daughters said he had a keen interest in intellectual debate, philanthropy and civil rights.

Korczak and Lomas said they also made the gift to enable CU students to better appreciate the the history of the Jewish people.
