Overnight construction crews will shut down a busy stretch of South Wadsworth Boulevard next week.

Starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, Wadsworth will be closed between Cross Street and West Bowles Avenue, near the Southwest Plaza mall, and it will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. The same stretch will shut down at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, reopening at 5 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday to carry daytime traffic.

The Bowles/Wadsworth Boulevard project will include a new southbound traffic lane on Wadsworth, a pedestrian bridge, upgraded traffic signals, new sidewalks and drainage improvements, according to a Jefferson County media release.

The project is funded by two federal highway grants and revenue from the South East Jefferson County Local Improvement District. A $6 million contract was assigned to American Civil Constructors in August 2010 and work will be ongoing through June 2011.

Detours will be set up during the closures.
