Parts of a mile-long stretch of Boulder’s Goose Creek Path were flooded on Saturday after someone apparently closed an irrigation control gate — an ongoing problem that city officials say is dangerous to the public.

Officials with the Boulder & White Rock Ditch Company called police Saturday after finding the control gate in the 2600 block of Mapleton Avenue closed.

When the gate is open and operating normally, water in the privately owned ditch flows east. When the gate is down, it diverts the flow of water into nearby Goose Creek.

According to a police report, someone apparently climbed the 4-foot fence that surrounds the gate and manually turned the control head. That sent an 18-inch wall of water into Goose Creek, which backed up and flooded the pedestrian and bike path. Police estimate the path was flooded for about one mile to where it intersects with Pearl Parkway.
