A car fire on U.S. 36 snarled eastbound traffic Thursday evening.

North Metro Fire Rescue spokeswoman Wendy Forbes said firefighters received a call about a car on fire at 6:17 p.m. The Audi was engulfed in flames by the time two fire engines arrived on the scene.

No other vehicles were involved, and no one was injured in the fire, which was just east of the FlatIron Crossing exit.

Passers-by said the car emitted thick, black smoke that could be smelled through the rain.

Traffic was backed up for several miles behind the fire.
