ASPEN, Colo.—Snow over Independence Pass is 25 feet deep in spots and the Colorado Department of Transportation is hoping to get it cleared in time to open May 26, but they’re making no promises.

The Aspen Times says crews are within a few miles of the summit.

The department’s goal is to open the pass before Memorial Day weekend.

Crews trying to clear Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park by Memorial Day are plowing their way through more than 20 feet of snow at spots.

Park officials said plow operators are dealing with some of the deepest snow seen along the route in years.
