A landspout tornado spun over a half-mile of land southeast of the Colorado Springs Airport around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, damaging a house and destroying a trailer, said Steve Hodanish, National Weather Service meteorologist.
A landspout tornado is typically less powerful than a supercell tornado, as it develops from the ground up instead of dropping down from the clouds above, Hodanish said. Thursday’s tornado lasted five to 10 minutes.
Falcon Fire Department Chief Trent Harwig saw it form from his fire station.
“It looked like it started out as a huge dust devil — started from the ground up, but it made it all the way into the clouds,” Harwig said.
