MOSCOW — An opposition protest in Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi was broken up by riot police late Wednesday, scattering about 1,000 people who had occupied a viewing stand where President Mikheil Saakashvili was set to preside over a military parade today. As the crowds were dispersing in clouds of tear gas, a car in a three-car motorcade fleeing the violence fatally hit a police officer, according to news agencies.

The media reported the car was carrying Georgia’s most prominent opposition leader, Nino Burdzhanadze, or her bodyguards, which, if true, could roil the politics of a close U.S. ally.
