A 42-year-old physician died Saturday morning while participating in the swim portion of a triathlon in Windsor.
Shortly before 8:30, a safety canoe spotted Dr. Michael Wiggins floating facedown in Windsor Lake, said Todd Vess, spokesman for the Windsor- Severance Fire Protection District.
Wiggins was spotted close to the end of the 800-meter swim where racers exit the water and get on their bikes, Vess said.
A rescue boat was called over, and crews started CPR as soon as Wiggins was pulled out of the water.
After reaching the shore, Wiggins was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies, where he was pronounced dead.
About 150 people participated in the race.
Wiggins was a physician with the Big Thompson Medical Group in Loveland.
The Larimer County coroner told the Fort Collins Coloradoan that Wiggins was diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm four years ago and he may have had a cardiac event during the race.
