“Biutiful”
*** 1/2 stars | Since Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu arrived on the scene in 2000, he has been the master of interwoven narratives. The Oscar-nominated “Biutiful” tightens his focus to one man while never cheating the others of their messy humanity. Javier Bardem is Uxbal, a divorced dad of two and a low-grade criminal hustling in Barcelona. Uxbal is walking through the valley of the shadow of death, battling prostate cancer. All the fathers, including Uxbal, love their children but also offer them as excuses for sorry choices: the cop on the take, the street vendor slinging dope on the side, the Chinese businessman running the sweatshop. The son of an absent father, Uxbal faces his impending absence from his own beloved children’s lives. “Biutiful” occupies the gritty realm of those forced to make do.
