TRINIDAD, Colo.—Cooler temperatures and higher humidity along the Colorado-New Mexico border have helped crews battling two wildfires that have scorched about 20 square miles.
Both fires are burning in sparsely populated areas in southern Colorado. A blaze started by lightning in New Mexico southeast of Trinidad last week has grown to nearly 6,900 acres, with about 320 of those acres in New Mexico. That fire was 40 percent contained Wednesday.
Four homes are in the path of the fire but no evacuations have been ordered.
A second fire at Purgatorie River Canyon northeast of Trinidad has burned about 6,100 acres and is 60 percent contained. It’s unclear when and how that fire started.
A total of 400 firefighters are battling both blazes.
KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs reports that a 200-acre fire is burning on ranchland east of Walsenburg ,about 40 miles north of Trinidad. No homes are threatened.
