A familiar face – and roar – is missing at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.
Elson, king of the lion pride, died Friday during a medical procedure.
Elson was born in the wild in Africa early in 1995, like Angie, his mate. He arrived in Colorado Springs a year or so later, paid for by a gift from a zoo board member passionate about the large, social cats.
He sired 13 cubs, and had seven grand cubs. Three lionesses from the most recent litter born in 2007 remain at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Others are at zoos including Pueblo, San Francisco, New York and Minot, N.D. The male cub born in 2007 is in Baltimore.
