Reigning PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer took a bit of a detour Thursday on his way from his native Germany to his house in Arizona. Kaymer, No. 3 in the current world golf rankings, was on the bag Thursday and caddied for his girlfriend, Allison Micheletti, at the HealthOne Colorado Women’s Open.

Kaymer is en route to Arizona to prepare for the U.S. Open later this month at Congressional Country Club in Washington, D.C. He met Micheletti in Arizona, where he resides when in the States. This is his first visit to Colorado.

“I love to be on the golf course anyway,” Kaymer said after Thursday’s round. “Sometimes it’s nice if I don’t have to play and just walk. It’s nice with the mountains around here.”

Micheletti shot a 5-over-par 77 in the first round Wednesday. Facing strong, gusty winds Thursday afternoon, Micheletti shot 80.

Golfers who teed off in the morning Thursday had a huge advantage, including tournament leader Jessica Carafiella, who shot a 2-under 70. She is the only player under par through 36 holes, at 1-under 143. University of Colorado senior-to-be Emily Talley and former LPGA Tour regular Cindy Figg-Currier are tied for second, four strokes back.

Micheletti made the cut, but Kaymer said he wasn’t sure if he would caddie for her today.

“It’s a good golf course,” Kaymer said of Green Valley Ranch. “Obviously, it was tough to play with that wind, but it looks good.”
