Nederland police Officer Darragh O’Nuallain has been on some interesting calls, but nothing quite like the report he took on Saturday afternoon of a pelican tied to the top of a large pine tree.

“It’s a large white pelican tied to the tree by its beak, with a copy of Watching Wildlife on its back,” O’Nuallain said, describing the scene at 95 Wolf Tongue Court.

According to O’Nuallain, the bird was found dead dangling from the top of a 35-foot ponderosa pine tree with the cover of the wildlife magazine strapped to its body.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife was alerted about the incident and would decide what to do with the bird, he said.

There was nothing to indicate that someone shot or otherwise killed the pelican, O’Nuallain said. Instead, it appears the bird was already dead when it was tied to the tree.
